SEIO

Working Group

The Nonparametric Statistics Working Group gathers circa eighty statisticians, of different institutions and academic ranks, with research interests on Nonparametric Statistics topics such as:

Curve estimation (density, regression, distribution, etc.) and smoothing methods.
Goodness-of-fit tests for parametric and semiparametric models.
Inference and prediction under (spatial, temporal, etc) dependence.
Set estimation.
Non-Euclidean data analysis (functional data, directional data, etc.).
Inference with incomplete information (missing data, truncation, censorship, etc.).
Computational statistics and software development.
Applications in diverse fields (medicine, engineering, economy, etc.).

The aims of the working group comprise:

Advancing research in the field of Nonparametric Statistics in Spain.
Increasing the contact between members of the Spanish Nonparametric community.
Promoting the exchange of knowledge and advances between the members of the group.
Improving the visibility of the Nonparametric research carried out within the group.
Contributing to the training of researchers with interests in Nonparametric Statistics.

2026

Organization of the Workshop on Functional, NonParametric and Spatio-Temporal Statistics: In honor of Wenceslao González Manteiga which was held in Santiago de Compostela from July 14 to 17, 2026 (https://sites.google.com/view/fnpsts/). Co-organized with the Spatio-Temporal Statistics Working Group and the Functional Data Analysis Working Group of SEIO, it constituted the fourth workshop of the group. This event served as a tribute to Professor Wenceslao González Manteiga, a pioneer of NonParametric Statistics in Spain. The workshop proceedings are available here (in English).
Four invited sessions organized at the XLII National Congress of Statistics, Operations Research and Data Science (SEIO 2026) which was held in Santiago de Compostela, from September 2 to 5, 2026 (https://seio2026.com/). The sessions brought together 18 speakers on the topics of “Nonparametric Estimation”, “Nonparametric Hypothesis Testing”, “Nonparametric Inference for Circular Data” and “Nonparametric Inference for Survival Analysis”.

2025

Three invited sessions organized at the XLI National Congress of Statistics and Operations Research (SEIO 2025) which was held in Lleida, from June 10 to 13, 2025 (https://seio2025.com/). The sessions brought together 14 speakers on the topics of “Nonparametric Estimation”, “Nonparametric Tests” and “High Dimension”.
Meeting of the group during the SEIO 2025 conference. Jose Ameijeiras Alonso leaves the coordination of the group. María Alonso Pena incorporates as co-coordinator of the Working Group.
Organization of the Workshop on Nonparametric Statistics which was held in Mieres, from July 16 to 18, 2025 (https://sites.google.com/view/wnpseio). This was the third workshop of the Nonparametric Statistics Working Group, and the first one held independently. The workshop proceedings are available here (in English).

2024

Organization of the II Joint Workshop on Functional Data Analysis and Nonparametric Statistics, held in Miraflores de la Sierra from September 10 to 13, 2024 (https://iiwfdanp.webnode.page/). This was the second workshop of the Nonparametric Statistics Working Group, co-organized with the Functional Data Analysis Working Group of SEIO. The workshop proceedings are available here.
Organization of the talk A tutorial on recent advances in multivariate kernel smoothing as part of the SEIO Seminar Series, delivered by José Enrique Chacón (University of Extremadura) on the YouTube Channel @SEIO_es (in Spanish).

2023

Organization of the I Joint Workshop on Functional Data Analysis and Nonparametric Statistics held in Miraflores de la Sierra, 6-9 June 2023 (https://iwfdanp.webnode.es). This was the first workshop of the Nonparametric Statistics Working Group, and was co-organized with the SEIO Working Group on Functional Data Analysis. Four invited sessions organized in the XL National Congress of Statistics and Operations Research (SEIO 2023) held in Elche, 7-10 November 2023 (https://seio2023.com/). The sessions gathered 16 speakers within the themes of “Nonparametric estimation”, “Nonparametric hypothesis testing”, “Modes-based data analysis”, and “High-dimensional nonparametric inference”. 2021

Organization of two invited sessions for the XXXIX National Congress of Statistics and Operations Research to be held in 2021, then postponed due to the pandemic.

2020

The website and mailing list of the Working Group are created.

2019

Eduardo García Portugués becomes the coordinator of the Working Group.
SEIO approves the creation of the group in September 2019. The creation proposal (in Spanish) gathers the support of 40 founding members.
